A wake-up light starts glowing before your alarm time and brightens step by step, so the room is already lit when the sound goes off. Product pages lead with figures like "up to 20,000 lux". Each maker measures under its own conditions, so two such figures describe two different situations.
This guide covers how to read a brightness claim, how to decide when the light should start, and how placement and sound fit together. Every figure below comes from a manufacturer's own manual or spec sheet, and where the measuring distance is missing, it says so.
What a wake-up light actually does
Most models begin lighting 20 to 40 minutes before the set time and raise the brightness gradually. At the set time the light reaches its maximum and, on most models, the alarm sound starts. The point is to have you already surfacing in a lit room rather than being pulled out of sleep by sound alone.
Morning light acts on the body clock. NIGMS, part of the US National Institutes of Health, describes light and dark as the strongest influences on circadian rhythms. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare puts the same idea in practical terms in its public health material, saying that light in the morning shifts the body clock earlier and that opening the curtains right after waking is a good first step.
The same source notes that light in the evening pushes the clock the other way, and that the effect grows stronger the later it gets. What the evidence supports
Light before waking has been studied directly. In a crossover trial published by Thompson and colleagues in 2014, people who reported difficulty waking were given a simulated dawn during the last 30 minutes of sleep. On the dawn mornings, subjective alertness, scores on an addition task, and reaction times all moved in the better direction. The trial had eight participants, so the size of the effect in the general population is still an open question.
Larger evidence sits in the light therapy literature. A 2005 meta-analysis by Golden and colleagues reported an effect size of 0.73 for dawn simulation in seasonal affective disorder, pooled from five studies, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.37 to 1.08. That is a summary of light used as a treatment for a mood disorder under clinical supervision, which is a different situation from a consumer alarm clock on a bedside table.
A wake-up light may help make waking gentler. The hours you actually sleep set the ceiling on how well the morning goes, so a bedtime that keeps drifting later comes first.
What to look at when choosing
Brightness dominates every product page. It is also the figure most often quoted without the measuring distance that makes it readable, so start there.
Read brightness together with the measuring distance
The same product can carry two very different lux figures. The Japanese maker moonmoon publishes a spec line for its inti4 model that reads "maximum 20,000 lux, measured under our own conditions, 2,500 lux at a distance of 30 cm". Both numbers describe one lamp. The first comes with the measuring condition left open; the second is the value 30 cm from the light source.
Philips states the distance in its manuals. The user manual for the Wake-Up Light HF3520 gives the light output across its 20 levels as "approx. 1 lux to 300 lux at 45 cm". The spec sheet for the HF3519 model lists "light intensity: 300 lux" and leaves the distance out.
Because of this, the figures on this page stay in prose rather than a comparison table. A lux value carries meaning only alongside the distance it was measured at. What matters in practice is the distance from your pillow to the lamp, and a model that publishes its brightness at a stated distance is easier to judge.
How early the light starts
The ramp length, meaning the time from first glow to full brightness, is usually adjustable. The Philips HF3520 defaults to 30 minutes and can be set to 20, 25, 30, 35, or 40 minutes. The HF3519 spec sheet describes the same sunrise process as adjustable between 20 and 40 minutes.
The Thompson trial also used the last 30 minutes before waking, which lines up with where these defaults sit. Starting at 30 minutes and moving in five-minute steps is a workable approach: shorten it if the light wakes you too early, lengthen it if the room still feels dark at the set time.
This setting only makes sense once your wake time is fixed, which the next section deals with.
Whether light and sound work together
Whether light alone is enough varies a lot between people, and keeping the sound as a backup is the safer way to start. On the Philips HF3520 the alarm sound begins after the light reaches full brightness, and pressing snooze brings it back nine minutes later.
If you would rather keep a clock face out of the bedroom, look for a model whose timing and brightness can be set from a phone. Some makers list app control and snooze together in the product specification, and those two together decide whether you can leave the device alone once it is placed.
Placement and distance from your eyes
Illuminance falls off quickly with distance, so where the lamp sits matters as much as the brightness setting. Given that published values describe a point 30 cm or 45 cm from the lamp, a unit on a shelf more than a metre away delivers far less light to your face than the catalogue figure suggests.
Before buying, check whether there is a power outlet near the head of the bed, whether the lamp can sit close to face height, and whether it can be angled so that turning over keeps the light in front of you. A model that cannot be placed well will disappoint regardless of its specification.
What changes by country
Wake-up lights are sold in different model variants by region, and the differences show up in the plug, the mains voltage, and who honours the warranty. Some of the models discussed here, including the moonmoon units, are sold in Japan only, so availability is worth confirming for your own country before deciding.
Reading the full model number rather than the marketing name is the quickest way to know what you are actually buying.
Setting the start time from your wake time
The start time is your wake time minus the ramp length. Someone waking at 7:00 with a 30-minute ramp is starting the light at 6:30, and a 40-minute ramp puts it at 6:20. Most devices ask for the wake time and the ramp separately, so it helps to do this subtraction before touching the settings.

When it seems to be doing little
If the first few days pass with no change, the cause usually sits in how the device is being used rather than in the device itself. Work through these in order.
- The lamp is too far away. Beyond a metre, the brightness measured at the published distance falls off before it reaches you
- Bedding or a sleep mask is covering your face. Light that never reaches your eyelids has the same result as a dark room
- The ramp is too short. At 20 minutes the light can hit full brightness while you are still in deeper sleep
- Sleep itself is short. Light works on the timing of waking, and a run of five-hour nights calls for more hours in bed
- Your wake time is swinging widely between days, which removes the consistency the signal depends on
People often ask whether a phone alarm with a screen-brightening feature can stand in for a dedicated lamp. A phone screen puts out a small fraction of the light, and the distance from your face changes every night. Trying it costs nothing, and treating the two as equivalent will lead you to the wrong conclusion about whether morning light helps you.

Using one safely
Avoid staring into the lamp at close range. A wake-up light belongs where the light enters your field of view while your attention is elsewhere.
If you are sensitive to light, are being treated for an eye condition, have a diagnosis of epilepsy, or have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, talk to your doctor before starting. Clinical light therapy is delivered with the intensity, timing and duration managed, which puts it in a different category from a consumer device used on your own judgement.

Can light alone wake me up?
It varies. There is evidence that light before waking improved alertness in a trial of eight people, which is too small a study to promise the same for everyone. Keep the alarm sound for the first couple of weeks, and drop it only once you are consistently waking to light.
How early should the light start?
Consumer models default to around 30 minutes and typically adjust between 20 and 40. Start at 30, shorten it if the light wakes you before you want, and lengthen it if the room still feels dark at your set time.
Can a phone app do the same job?
A phone screen emits a small fraction of the light a dedicated lamp does, and its distance from your face changes every night. Trying it is free, and the brightness of the two sits an order of magnitude apart.
Why does it feel weaker in winter?
In winter your wake time often falls before sunrise, so the lamp switches off into a still-dark room with no daylight behind it. A longer ramp and switching on room lighting soon after waking both help in that season.
Is it a substitute for light therapy in seasonal affective disorder?
That is a decision for a clinician. The light therapy research was conducted as treatment, with intensity, timing and duration controlled. A consumer wake-up light sits outside that setting.
